The Continent Project

 

Demonstrate an understanding of basic geographic literacy.

CYSO03.1.1.01     Compare maps, globes and atlases.

CYSO03.1.1.02     Use the key and symbols on a map of our country and the world.

CYSO03.1.1.03     Use a compass rose with the four cardinal directions.

CYSO03.1.1.04     Name the intermediate directions.

CYSO03.1.1.05     Locate and identify the continents and oceans on a map and globe.

CYSO03.1.1.06     Locate and identify the Equator.

CYSO03.1.1.07     Divide the earth into Northern and Southern hemispheres.

CYSO03.1.1.08     Locate continents and oceans in Northern and Southern hemispheres.

 

Words To Know:

Compass Rose - Tells you direction (N) north, (S) south, (E) east, (W) west

Continent - One of the seven main land areas on the earth (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America)

Equator - Imaginary line halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole to create the North and South Hempisphere.

Globe - Spherical representation of the earth

Hemisphere - Half of the earth

Latitude - distance north or south of the equator

Longitude - distance east or west of Prime Meridian

Map - Flat picture of the earth or area

Ocean - Large body of salt water (Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Southern Ocean bordering Antarctica and extending from 60 degrees latitude. This fifth ocean was recognized by the International Hydrographic Organization in the spring of 2000.)

Prime Meridian - Circle that divides the earth in half vertically at Greenwich, England to create the Eastern and Western Hemisphere.

 

Project

1. Identify your continent on a world map and a globe.

2. Identify the ocean(s) in the area of your continent.

3. Identify three (3) important facts about your continent (countries, rivers, deserts, mountains, animals).

4. Work together in a team and present your information to the rest of the class.

5. Develop a quiz question for the Senteo (Response System).

6. Create a geocache of your continent for students to locate and record information into their passport.
